Jesus Saves The Testimony of Travis Kleinman

When I first opened my eyes to this
world, I found that God had placed
me in the arms of a praying mother. A
Christian woman, whose faith in God
is simple, yet solid. She raised me
around the basic Biblical truths that I
still believe today and showed me the
importance of applying God’s Word
within the world that we live in.
Mom and my grandma raised me in a solid, Bible based, Baptist Church for eighteen years.
being very interested in the things of God at a very young age. I remember several
occasions sitting by my mother’s feet while she washed dishes, as I asked her Biblical
questions. I can recall asking her about many basic doctrinal truths and I can also recall
asking her very difficult theological questions, in which she would always reply, “I will have
to ask a deacon about that one.”
After one such occasion, I told my mom that I wanted to be saved. She asked me a few
questions and told me that we would talk to our pastor about it the next morning. So after
the morning service, I anxiously went to the front of the church to talk with our pastor,
Charles Click. I was a very quiet and timid child and Pastor Click is someone whom I had
the utmost respect for. When he bent down to talk to me, my heart raced and I was
overcome by nerves and intimidation. With my heart pounding, he asked, “Son, are you
lost?” I was dumbfounded. I had never heard it expressed in those terms before and I
remember being extremely confused. I looked at him and replied, “Brother Click, I’m not
lost, my mom’s right here!” Charles smiled, rose to his feet, and told my mom that he
wanted to make sure that I understood what salvation meant before making a profession of
faith.
To this day that story makes me laugh! I can remember that day so clearly and I can
remember talking about the incident with my mom later that evening. I had asked my mom
so many in-depth Bible based questions that she was surprised that I didn’t recognize what
it meant to “be lost.” If he had asked it in any other way, I would have known what he
meant. I knew that Jesus died for my sins and I knew the reality of a place called Hell. To
this day, I know that I was ready to make my profession that day, but I also understand why
Pastor Click wanted me to wait. He is a great man of faith and he wanted to make sure that
my decision was made on serious terms.
A few months later, on June 16, 1988, I prayed the sinner’s prayer with missionary/deacon
Steve Black. In a small recreational room behind the church during Bible school, Steve
asked if anyone wanted to be saved and I anxiously responded to the call. However, in my
mind, God made me one of His children while I was talking with my Mom in the kitchen.
God saw my heart, and as Charles Swindoll once said, “When a searching child seeks a
loving Father, they are bound to meet.”
Being saved at a young age was great, and I thank God for the many hedges that He put
around me. He not only gave me my mother, but He placed people in my life who kept me
close to Him. He gave me a Dad who was a hard worker and a good provider. A brother
who is a best friend and was my anti-drug growing up. He gave me grandparents who
taught me about morals, hard work, and the simple things in life.
Growing up, I had multiple close friends who were drinking alcohol and were using multiple
forms of drugs, but God’s hedge was around me. I never had a desire for such things, and
the friends that were using drugs would shelter and protect me from it. At the time, I thought
that they were being good friends by treating me in such a way, but now I realize that God
was there, sheltering me.
During my senior year of high school, when I really came to the first crossroads in my life,
and God sent me my wife. God knew I needed her. She is a genuine person and has
genuine faith in God. She helped redirect my path and introduced me to my father-in-law,
who has taught me so much about God’s Word and living the Christian life.
And most recently, God gave me my two boys, of whom I am forever grateful for. Nearly
every time I pray, I cannot help, but thank God for all of the many hedges that he has put in
my life. From my Mom to my boys, God is so good.
